WorkSafe Tasmania is committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable cracker night for all members of the community. While most Tasmanians enjoy and use fireworks responsibly, we acknowledge that some people use them inappropriately or illegally. WorkSafe Tasmania will endeavour to take the necessary steps to investigate unsafe or illegal use of fireworks.
We greatly appreciate the community’s efforts in reporting unsafe or illegal use of fireworks and all reports directly support our enforcement efforts and contribute to safer fireworks events in the future.
How to report unsafe or illegal fireworks
To ensure an effective investigation, the following criteria must be met:
- Submit complaints in writing via email to wst.fireworks@justice.tas.gov.au or wst.info@justice.tas.gov.au, or by mail to PO Box 56, Rosny Park, TAS 7018.
- Witnessing unsafe or illegal use is required - enforcement action can only be taken if a person is witnessed using fireworks in an unsafe or illegal manner. Reports based solely on noise or lights in the sky usually cannot be acted upon.
- Photographic or video evidence – assists where investigations are required and is encouraged wherever possible
- Specific location details – we need a precise address to investigate illegal fireworks. General areas, e.g., “Lenah Valley,” are not sufficient and do not allow for an investigation.
- Willingness to provide a statement – for higher enforcement actions, such as issuing fines or pursuing court proceedings, a statement is required.
