A respirator may filter out the silica dust, but it is a form of personal protective equipment, and its effectiveness depends on several factors. These include whether it is the proper type, whether it fits the operator properly, whether the operator wears it when required, whether the operator is clean shaven (for negative pressure respirators), whether it is cleaned and maintained properly and whether the filters are changed when required. An occupational hygienist can provide this advice.
