2017-18 Health Care Industry Campaign

Beginning June 2017, WorkSafe’s Inspectors will work with employers in these industry sectors:

  • Residential Care and Health Care sector
  • Health Care sector, including Child Care, Social Assistance, Medical, Pathology & Diagnostic, Allied Health

— to develop, implement and monitor systems that reduce the impact of the following key issues on the health and safety of their workers:

  • Workplace culture – management and workforce attitude/behaviour
  • Workplace stress – procedures, client factors and colleagues
  • Capacity (fitness) for work
  • Safety procedures not being followed
  • Inadequate incident investigation

These issues were identified in the Body Stressing Project 2015, inspections and incident data.

WorkSafe is contacting employers to arrange workplace visits. However, if we do not contact you but you would like to be involved, please call or email our Helpline.

WorkSafe’s Inspectorate will conduct the following activities.

Systems inspections of:

  • Incident and near miss reporting and investigation
  • Procedures and training for resident conditions and behaviours
  • Workers/beds/time allocated ratio
  • Plant maintenance, procurement, training and supervision
  • Workplace culture development

Worksite inspection focused on plant accessibility (storage area supply radius and layout of rooms plant is used in), modernity and condition.

Confidential discussion with management and 20% of workers (extended care assistants and registered nurse/s) focused on workplace culture, safety procedures and capacity (fitness) for work.

Presentations with management and workers about the challenges and opportunities identified from the above activities.

A report will be provided to each workplace, detailing the opportunities for improvement and recommended actions.
